Mamadou Dahoué and the Ancestral Messengers Dance Co, founded in 1997, is a manifestation of a vision revealed to Mr. Dahoué by his ancestors. The directive of this vision is to spread love, respect and unity which are the very foundation of all African culture. To that end, Mr. Dahoué continues to breathe life into the ancient African traditions through music, dance, and song. The company consists of professional mask dancers and master drummers from the Ivory Coast and dancers of the African diaspora. Mr. Dahoué’s repertoire includes traditional mask dances. Traditional African masks embody the history and aspirations of African society.
Inspired by primal forces, their features also reflect the peoples’ spiritual quest and the earthly challenges they face. Along with drumming, vocals and other musical instruments, the masks take center stage. Zaouly, Gueblin (stilt –walker), Flaly, and Djouanigbê masks are awe-inspiring masks dances. Other dances performed by the company include celebration dances such as Coucouba, Ziglibity, Yagba, and Tematé. Ritual dances consist of Zoua, N’goron and Zanloloba to name a few.
The company’s many television and stage performances have included City Arts for PBS, Good Day New York, “Dance Africa” at BAM, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, International African Arts Festival, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, World Trade Center Plaza, and the Folk Arts Programs to name a few.
